Red Burst

This 11"x11" mosaic is made predominately of smalti. Smalti is richly colored,
rectangular slabs of glass. Those in this mosaic are from Murano, Italy. This
is the first piece I have created using this material, though, historically,
this was the material mosaics were made of. I still prefer stained glass, which
you will also find in Red Burst, along with some beads. I love the highly
textured effects that you can get with smalti. It is also not usually grouted
so that intense color is not diluted in any way. This is my second
monochromatic piece. Now that I've done them, I realize that I truly do like to
have more variety and contrast in my palette.
